He was elected as MP for Croydon North East in 1964 and is well remembered as a formidable speaker of the House of Commons, a role which he fulfilled from 1984 to 1992.

Amongst the many tributes that have been paid to Lord Weatherill The Rt Revd and Rt Hon Dr Richard Chartres, Bishop of London, speaking in the House of Lords said “We have the title “Lords Spiritual” but Jack Weatherill was one of the Lords Spiritual in reality.” He went on to describe him as “a genuinely spiritual person” who “cared for the coherence of the whole of society”. Though ICF will be the poorer for his passing, the experience of his leadership will have a longstanding impact on our work.

Lord Weatherill

ICF members were sad to learn of the death of the Rt. Hon. The Lord Weatherill aged 86 years on 6th May. Lord Weatherill served for many years as chair of council, taking an active interest in ICF’s affairs and giving his personal support to members of the executive.

He was recently appointed patron of ICF in recognition of his faithful service to the organisation.

He had a varied experience of the world of work, having begun his career as an apprentice to his father’s firm of Saville Row tailors. From here he went in 1939 to serve in the Oxon & Bucks Light Infantry, being commissioned the following year in the Royal Dragoon Guards. His military service continued with the Kings Own Lancers in India, before returning to the family business of which he eventually became managing director.
